Steel turning is a process based on machining the material with the use of turning tools. The steel element is mounted on a lathe chuck, which causes the material to rotate. Turning is a machining operation designed to machine external (turning) and internal (boring) surfaces.

We can distinguish roughing, shaping and finishing. Technological parameters, mainly depth of cut and feed, of these machining methods vary depending on the workpiece material, tool efficiency and machine tool capabilities.

The above machining can also be divided into quality criteria that are used in turning machining:

  • rough turning,
  • medium precision turning,
  • fine turning, 
  • very accurate turning.
